Fleas are small insects that can cause a great deal of problem to your cat or dog. They normally thrive anywhere from 65-80 degrees temperature and at a humidity level of at least 75-85%. Hence, you will find fleas almost in every environment, any country except maybe the far Lapland or the Antarctic. Dogs as well as cats are prone to diseases caused by fleas. Fleas can infest dogs and cats with ease as they can transfer from one dog to another. Fleas can’t fly, they can only jump, which they do very well from one animal to another.

The bad news is that flea bite can lead to itching and your dog will have to spend most of his time try to get rid of itching. For some dogs, excessive itching can lead to inflammation, redness of skin, hair-loss, and even secondary skin infections. The best way to fight flea bites is to get your dog the best pet health care. You can alternatively use Fronline spot on, which is a great treatment for dogs as well as cats. The salient point of Fronline spot on is that it will provide long-term protection for your dog or cat.

Fronline spot on contains fipronil, which is a phenylpyrazole and it is licensed for daily use in the form of veterinary medicine. Fipronil used in Fronline spot on is not at all an organo-phosphate compound. Fleas have always troubled dogs and cats and sometimes the experience can become extremely frustrating for you as well. You would even start thinking that the fleas can’t be removed but the truth is that with good pet health care and the regular use of Fronline spot on, you can provide your dog with relief from fleas.

Officially classified as a type of NFA-VPS medicine, Fronline spot on is considered a non-food animal medicine, which can be sold by pharmacies. You will not need any clinical assessmentsof your dog before using the medicine and its use will keep fleas away from your cat. The working of the Fronline spot on is quite simple. The moment it is in direct contact with the fleas, it will kill the parasite within a period of 24 hours and the good part is the fleas will not bite or sting your dog or cat.

You can apply Fronline spot on at the back of the neck of your dog or cat. The active ingredient in Fronline spot on called fipronil will dissolve with ease into the skin of your dog or cat and even the coat. Within 24 hours, it will disperse over the entire body of your dog and at the same time focus on sebaceous glands. As a result, it’s overall effect is powerful.

When Your Dog Starts to Sneeze There are many things that both the dogs and the dog ownerscould have in common. For example, both dogs and dog ownerscould be prone to obesity if not regulating food intake and bynot exercising. In addition, dogs and humans may also acquire diseases thatresults from improper dietary regimen like diabetes, heartdiseases, etc. Moreover, the most amusing thing that both dogs and humans shareis the fact that they are both vulnerable to allergies.Sounds impossible? Think again.

Veterinary experts assert that dogs have allergies too. One ofthe primary signs of allergies is the itching of their skin.Their respiratory tract system can also be affected withallergies. Normally, dogs will manifest symptoms of respiratory tractallergies like sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. Their nose andtheir eyes may also manifest a discharge just like humans dowhenever they have colds or flu. There are also allergies that may have an effect on theirdigestive system; hence, it may result as watery stools, diarrhea, or vomiting.

Experts say that almost 20% of the dogs in the United Statessuffer from several types of allergy. So, for people who want toknow more about the different allergies that dogs acquire, hereis a list of the most common allergies:1. Allergies with fleasIt is a well-known fact that dogs are usually infected withfleas. However, what most people do not know is that they canget allergies through these fleas, too.Well, it is not the fleas that actually cause the allergicreactions in dogs but the flea’s saliva.

Hence, it is importantfor the dog to undergo a skin allergy examination so as todetermine if a particular dog is sensitive to flea saliva. In the event that the dog is allergic to flea saliva, it wouldbe better for the owner to implement a rigorous flea control orflea eradication treatment in order to lessen the allergicreactions. Though, it must be kept in mind that solutions thatare used in flea control should be safe for the dog.2. Allergies pertaining to foodsLike humans, dogs get allergies from food as well.

There areinstances wherein dogs get allergies from foods that theirsystem cannot tolerate, such as wheat, soy products, pork, beef, whey, fish, eggs, milk, corn, artificial sweeteners, andchemical preservatives that are placed in their food. Moreover, dogs can get allergies in food that they have nottried before. The best way to combat this particular allergyproblem is to feed the dog commercial dog foods more ofteninstead of homemade products. Some signs of allergic reactions to food in dogs are shaking ofthe head, scratching the ears, irritated skin, biting andlicking at the rear feet, inflammations in the ear, sneezing, behavioral changes, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

3. Atopic DermatitisAtopic dermatitis is a known allergic skin disease in dogs. Thisis usually caused by the hypersensitivity of the dog’s immunesystem to ordinary substances that can be found in theenvironment like molds or dust mites.Usually, a dog is said to be suffering from atopic dermatitiswhen the dog begins to excessively lick and chew its paws, licking the abdomen and its rear feet.Atopic dermatitis can be seen as a saliva staining found in thearmpits, between the toes of the paws, and in the groin.

Inlight-colored canines, atopic dermatitis can be seen as ared-brown stain found on the same parts that were mentioned.4. Allergies resulting from bacteriaThis is the most common cause of serious allergies in dogs.Generally, there are certain bacteria that thrive in the dog’sskin. This is known as the species of Staphylococcus bacteria. In most cases, this does not cause allergies in dogs. However, there are certain types of dogs that develop an allergy to it.The most common symptom of this kind of allergy is hair lossalong with the development of ringworm like marks in the dog’sskin.

The areas where these marks appear usually get infected, hence, it is important to treat them with antibiotics.Indeed, allergies are not for humans only. Allergies greataffects almost 20% of the total population of dogs in the UnitedStates, and that is a pretty alarming number. Therefore, it isextremely important for dog owners to know these dog allergiesin order to prevent them from further exposure.

Fleas are a problem for dogs and their owners alike. These tiny insects will live on the body of your dog, sucking the animal’s blood and laying eggs. The bites and presence of fleas will cause the dog to itch and if the dog happens to be allergic to fleas (the allergy is technically to the insects’ saliva) it can experience extreme itching, loss of fur in some places, inflammation, and infections. Regardless of whether the dog has an allergy to flea saliva, infestations must be dealt with or they will go on and on and the fleas will also infest your home, other pets, and can even live on humans.

In short; you can be directly and adversely affected by an uncontrolled flea infestation.Detecting Fleas:If you suspect that your dog has fleas because it’s been scratching more than usual, there are ways to check for their presence. Fleas are very small (about an eighth of an inch long), but visible to the naked eye, and brownish in color. Because they prefer dark places they will try to hide beneath the dog’s fur, under the collar, or on the underbelly. Their fecal material can also be seen on the dog’s coat and looks like multiple black flecks or specks – almost like pepper.

If fleas or their droppings are found it is time to treat your dog to get rid of them.Treating Your Dog for Fleas:While flea collars, powders, and sprays may help to prevent infestations to some extent, they will not help if the dog is already infested. When fleas are infesting a dog the female lays eggs at a rate of about thirty per day. These eggs fall off the dog and into the carpet, soil, or wherever the dog may be. In these areas they hatch and pupate, eventually growing into adult fleas which can then re-infest the dog.

In order to halt the cycle all the fleas on the dog and in the environment must be killed or the life cycle must be interrupted. There are several flea treatments available for dogs, but one of the best is an oral medication that will not kill adult fleas, but does kill the eggs and larva. This interrupts the flea life cycle and prevents them from coming back, as long as the dog is not continually exposed to new fleas. If that is happening, the source must be cleaned of fleas whether it is the carpet, the environment, or other dogs with which your pet associates.

Fleas can be a real nuisance for dogs and their owners, but catching them and treating the dog quickly is the key to eliminating the infestation and preventing the insects’ return.

The natural way: • Vacuum your home frequently and seal vacuum bags before disposing. • Wash the bedding of your dog weekly in warm soapy water. This is where fleas usually breed. • Bathing your pet weekly with a mild dog shampoo prevents flea invasion. • Use cedar shampoo for your dog, and put cedar oil in their sleeping mats. Cedar will repel fleas and other insects. • Fleas are attracted to dry skin, so to avoid it, give your dog Linatone oil mixed with its food. Excessive shampooing should be avoided.

• A mixture of brewer’s yeast and garlic, available in powder or tablet form can be given in small doses to your pet. This creates a certain odor in pets, and fleas are surely to avoid them. • Fresh or dried pennyroyal leaves is a natural flea repellent. Use this in carpets to avoid the abundance of fleas in the home. Do not use it if you have small children around, as this could be toxic. • A mixture of 60 ml of lavender oil with 2.8 liters of rock salt can also be placed in areas where dogs usually come in contact with and this solution could also be used to wash your dog.

• Planting marigolds in the yard is helpful too, it repels certain types of bugs as well as fleas. • Boiled lemon or orange peel in water can be used as a dip for dogs and can be used too to soak in dog bedding for a few hours, then washed with warm soapy water. • Lukewarm water with little shampoo and detergent is a good way to prevent fleas. A dog’s body may be dipped into the solution for fifteen minutes and then rinsed. This only works if flea infestation is light. The natural way of treating fleas is effective only if the level of flea infestation is average to very few.

This method usually is recommended for prevention only. Different commercially available products with chemical contents: • Advantage. Active ingredient is imidacloprid. This is a flea poison, from Bayer. It is in a liquid form and applied to the skin, at the back of the dog, and works for about a month. This works by upsetting the nervous system of fleas when they come in contact with the liquid. This product is fast acting and is not absorbed into the internal organs and bloodstream of the dog.

Studies indicate that this product is highly toxic to fleas and other insects as well. A dog will be free from fleas in just a couple of days. Ingredients are: imidacloprid — a chloronicotinyl nitroguanidine integrated from the nitromethylene class of a compound. This joins the nicotinyl receptor sites of insects, thus upsetting normal nerve transmission which causes death. A set of two vials costs 15-20 dollars. • Frontline. This product is very similar to Advantage, but is not water soluble, so alcohol is needed to wash it off.

This can safely be used in pups, dogs, cats and kittens. Efficiency in repelling lasts up to four months. Active ingredients include: Fipronil 5-amino -1- (2, 6-dichloro-4 [trifluoromethyl]phenyl) -4- (1,R,S)- (trifluoromethyl0sulfinyl) -1H-pryazole-3-carbonitrile 0.29% inert ingredients 99.71%. Fipronil works as a nervous transmission interruptor, which causes quick death to fleas and ticks. It is proven to kills 96% of fleas for the first two hours and 100% within 24 hours. Ticks die sooner than they attach themselves to the host.

Fipronil is from the new phenylpyrazole class. Very effective and can be considered safe, so long as dogs are not allergic to fipronil. • Knockout. Performs like Frontline and is as effective, but can only be used in dogs. Active ingredients: Pyriproxyfen: 21[1-methyl-2-(phenoxyphenoxy)ethyoxy] pyridine….0.05% cyclopropanecarboxylate 2.00% inert ingredients 97.95% Also has NYLAR, which is flea growth regulator. • Biospot. This is for topical application and kills up to 75 percent of fleas, eggs, and ticks.

It also is a good repellant of mosquitoes and works for about a month. Temporarily, at times, it turns white hair to yellow. This can not be used in cats and contains permethrins and IGR. • Proban (cythioate) and Prospot (Fenthion). While not to be used in cats, they are widely used in dogs. This is absorbed by the bloodstream and fleas die due to the poison that is present in the blood. For it to work, it requires the bitting of fleas. There are certain conditions to be considered though. You are injecting a small dose of poison into your dog’s body and side effects are not known.

Then this does not help if a dog has flea allergy, and can not risk to be bitten. Generally fleas abound during the summer months, when it is their breeding season. These commercial products can greatly help in fighting heavy flea infestation and needed where severe invasion occurs. However, it is always best to consult with your veterinarian as the choice of flea control will greatly depend on your life style.

Parasites can cause serious diseases that can even be lethal to small or weak canines. That is why you need to adopt an effective flea and tick control for dogs. This is not difficult and time consuming and your efforts will certainly pay off.For effective flea and tick control for dogs, you need to use the right type of medication to treat your pet with. There are insecticides that can kill both fleas and ticks. The on-spot medications, which affect the nerve receptors of the parasites, are very fast.

This allows them to prevent bites effectively. If you want full protection for your dog, you should consider using a medication which can kill flea eggs and larvae and which can repel ticks as well as kill them. The spot-on medications should be applied every month, starting from late winter, preferably the beginning of March. You can end the flea and tick control program after the first hard frost, but this is not highly recommended, since some kinds of ticks can live through cold weather. If you live in a region with warm climate, it is essential for you to carry out the program throughout the entire year.

Treating your pet with preventative products is essential, but you should also ensure that the environment is safe as well. It is best not to let your dog play in grassy areas outdoors. Generally, the park green areas should have been treated for fleas and ticks, so it should not be a problem to walk your pet in the park.It is a good idea to avoid heaving abundant vegetation in your backyard. You should also clean your home thoroughly. This is necessary for effective flea and tick prevention for dogs (and humans).

Make sure you clean the carpet and rugs with powerful detergents along with vacuuming them regularly. More importantly, wash your dog’s bedding frequently and do not let it stay humid.

Having fleas is not only uncomfortable for a dog, it makes the owner uneasy as well. The thought of the tiny insects infesting the home makes a person feel itchy all over. In order to prevent this situation, dog owners should learn how to get rid of fleas on dogs. The life cycle of a flea is three to four months but during that time, it can lay hundreds of eggs. To get rid of fleas on the dog before this happens, wash the canine with a dog flea shampoo or add neem oil or eucalyptus to the regular shampoo.

If the dog does not yet have fleas, the critters can be deterred by adding neem oil or eucalyptus to the shampoo.Groom the dog regularly using a flea comb, dipping the comb in soapy water following each stroke, in order to kill the fleas. Use tea tree oil mixed with water or try aloe vera to provide soothing to any infected areas on the dog’s skin. These spots can become quite painful for the dog and treating them will prevent the canine from chewing on the area, making it worse.Use a chemical or natural flea repellent on the dog to prevent fleas from landing on it in the first place.

Spot-on liquid treatments should be placed on the dog’s skin in the shoulder blade and tail areas. These contain toxins, so they can be harmful to the dog, the environment, and humans. There are natural treatments such as Flea Away powder, or essential oils that can be placed on the collar or diluted with water and sprayed on the dog. Some of these oils are blended together and offered for purchase as a single product, such as Bite This! sold by Grrroom Dog.Fleas are attracted to malnourished dogs and defenseless puppies, due to the weak immune systems that these creatures possess.

Feeding a dog a raw diet or one that does not contain by-products, digests, food coloring, or chemical preservatives will improve this situation. Adding brewer’s yeast or garlic powder or tablets will deter fleas due to the taste. Consult with a veterinarian prior to doing this because too much of these products can be toxic to the animal.Knowing how to get rid of fleas on dogs will make the canine and its human owner much happier and more comfortable. Bathing with a flea shampoo, grooming with a flea comb, and treating with flea repellent is the recommended course of action.

Enhancing the dog’s diet with natural foods, garlic, and brewer’s yeast will also prevent fleas from coming around.

Some people think that since their pet lives inside the house, it is perfectly safe from any parasite infestation. This is definitely not the case. As long as your dog goes out and meets other dogs, it can get infested by fleas. Thankfully, dog fleas treatment is easy to adopt and relatively quick to take effect. You will get the desired results, provided that you do everything correctly.Firstly, you have to choose the right medication to treat your dog with. The standard shampoos, powders, sprays and rinses will kill the parasites almost immediately.

However, they do not offer long term protection. New fleas can infest your pet. Moreover, larvae can hatch from eggs and continue to grow on your dog’s skin. For these reasons, you need to use a medication with complete and long term effect. There are topically applied products which are effective for up to three months and which break the cycle of development of fleas along with killing mature ones.Dog fleas treatment should be done in line with the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the medication.

Usually, the topical flea control products of the type described above are applied monthly. If you have any doubts or questions, you should not hesitate to contact your veterinarian for advice. The eggs, larvae and especially the pupas of fleas can survive in bedding, carpets and cracks in wooden floors, even if the dog is treated for these parasites. For this reason, you have to maintain the surround environment clean from pests. The bedding of your pet should be washed regularly. Do not let it stay humid.

You should vacuum the floors frequently. It is best to clean carpets and rugs with strong cleaners on a regular basis as well. If the problem is persistent, you can treat your entire house for parasites as part of the dog fleas treatment.

There are many different dog breeds and each breed will vary in regards to hair coat and which method is best for the care of that breed’s coat. Shorthaired dogs should be brushed and longhaired dogs need to be carefully combed and then brushed to bring out additional luster to their coat.Brushing all the way down to the skin will stimulate the circulation of the blood to promote skin cell growth and will help loosen and remove flakes of dander. Daily brushing is the best, but in these hectic times brushing several times during the week will help keep the average dog neat and clean.

For dogs that shed, it is important to groom frequently to help remove the dead hair and to help reduce the amount of dog hair left in the house if your dog is an indoor pet.Mats in your dog’s hair can be difficult to remove. Take a comb and try teasing the mat apart using one or two teeth of the comb. If this doesn’t work and you have to cut the mat out, take the comb and work it all the way through the mat as far away from your dog’s skin as you can. Dogs should be bathed as seldom as possible, since frequent washing removes their natural oils and causes the coat to dry out and to become harsh.

When it is necessary to wash your dog, it is best to use a mild shampoo. Following are steps to take when bathing your dog: ท	Stand your dog in a tub or basinท	Put cotton in its earsท	Put a few drops of mineral oil in his or her eyesท	Wet your dog with water and apply shampoo. Work up a good lather. If you are using a flea/tick shampoo, check the directions for the length of time to leave on your dog. Rinse you dog well when finished and try to get a towel around your dog before he/she starts to shake or you’ll get a bath too.

Our little dog, Annie (a Shih Tzu) loves for us to use a blow dryer while brushing to dry her. Our other two dogs, Nikki (a German Shepard mixed) and Diogi (a Black Lab mixed) both prefer towel drying. If you are starting with a young puppy, take your time in teaching them to stand while you bathe them. There are shampoos made specifically for bathing your puppy. These shampoos are very mild and will say they are puppy shampoos. Make sure you keep your puppy safe and secure. They will learn to trust you and will enjoy getting a bath, instead of running to hide somewhere.

Your dog’s nails are also an important part of grooming. Nails should be cut once every two months depending on the amount of exercise your dog gets and the type of surface it walks on. Do NOT use ordinary scissors to cut your dog’s nails. There are specially designed dog nail trimmers that can be purchased at pet stores. Cut your dog’s nails just outside the pink blood line. If your dog has dark colored nails and you can’t see the blood line, the cut should be made by noting the curvature of the underside of the nail.

Remove only the hook-like part of the nail.Eyes also need regular care particularly dog breeds with the large protruding eyes like Annie (my Shih Tzu). The large protruding eyes are at a higher risk of injuries and accidental scratches or bruises. Breeds like the Shih Tzu, have longer face hair that can irritate their eyes. It is important to keep the hair out of their eyes. Small barrettes can help keep the hair out of their eyes. There are products on the market that can help relieve mild eye irritations.

Constant irritation may produce a chronic infection and you should seek professional advise from your veterinary. Last, but not least, are your dog’s ears. The ears are very delicate. Your dog’s ear trouble usually starts from irritation of the lining inside of the ear. This is why when bathing your dog you need to put cotton in its ears to keep the soap and water out. Ear mites, foreign objects and excessive earwax are other irritates. Dogs with hair-filled ear canals need to have the hair removed very gently (remove only a few hairs at a time).

There are products at pet stores that you can get for the control of ear mites. If your dog has pain or chronic ear infections get professional advice.

Ticks are worldwide, there are over 800 species, and they feed on the blood of an animal to survive. Ticks attach themselves to animals or people, which is called a host and they begin to lay eggs. The eggs are in an inactive stage at first, then they grow into larvae and they must feed on blood to continue to the next stage. After that, they become a nymph and then an adult. It takes from one to two years to become an adult. Many ticks carry diseases in their saliva, most known are Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease.

It’s hard to see ticks because they do not fly or jump on their host. They climb to the tops of blades of grass and extend their legs and wait for something to brush against them and then they attach and look for a place to bury their heads. Not all ticks are infected but you can’t tell that by just looking at them, its best to remove any tick that is on you. A tick that is crawling on you cannot transmit disease. Most ticks hide in areas such as the woods or in brush piles, many animals find these places comforting but don’t know the real danger.

Make sure to keep your lawn neat, ticks love to hide in brush piles and areas that are wooded and if they are close to your home, you are giving them an invitation to come in. If you have to put up a fence to keep out wild animals, do so; this will eliminate any animals wondering into your yard or onto your property. Remember children do not know the dangers of ticks; therefore, you must keep play areas away from wooded areas. If you have to spray for ticks, find a company that can do it professionally.

If you are careless, you could contaminate drinking water and poison your pets. If you do find a tick on your or a family member, you need to carefully remove the tick. Do not yank on the tick’s body because it will only bury its head deeper and cause its mouthpiece to break off and stay inside your skin. Use tweezers and gently pull on the tick so its whole body stays intact. Lighting a match to it might cause the tick to release more saliva into your system and if it’s infected, you will need to consult a physician.

In order to limit your exposure to ticks, if you plan to hike in wooded areas, you should wear light colored clothing so you can see whether there are any ticks are crawling on you. Tuck your pants into your socks so ticks can’t crawl up your socks onto your skin. You can use DEET to repel them but it doesn’t last very long, also DEET can make children sick. You should inspect every part of your body once you return to a neutral place. Check children thoroughly, armpits, ears, hair and private areas.

Follow these steps and you will not have any problems.

Like people, dogs need to be healthy to enjoy life. Dogs are our friends, companions and often our guardians, but since they are also totally dependent on us for their well-being, it is our responsibility to look after them properly. One of the most prevalent ‘diseases’ in dogs these days is one that also affects humans. Obesity. A fat dog is an unhealthy dog and is likely to suffer from arthritis and heart failure. Remember, in the wild dogs eat fresh meat that they have killed themselves. They also eat certain types of grass and may eat wild fruits like berries if these grow in their natural habitat.

Milk, custard and cake are the worst things you can give your grown dog and, though a puppy may benefit from the calcium in milk, there are commercial milk products available that are especially formulated for a puppy’s needs.Dry dog food, or kibble as it is sometimes called, is said to have all the nutrients that your dog will need for health, but the dearer brands are often better. Dogs fed on cheaper brands may constantly chew grass to supplement whatever is missing from their diet.A healthy dog should have a smooth, shining coat, clear eyes and a moist nose.

If your dog’s breath is disgusting, it could be due to the tartar on its teeth. Chewing on a big bone will help to clean your dog’s teeth.Regular worming will also help to keep your pet in top condition. Shots for distemper, heartworm, parvovirus and kennel cough are a must. Kennel cough is not likely to be a problem unless the dog is kept on cement. Your vet will need to administer the shots, but you can worm the dog yourself. The tablets should be pushed down the side of the dog’s mouth until he swallows.

If this is too difficult, crush the tablet into some tinned dog food and offer when the dog is hungry. Luckily, it is not transmitted to humans.Symptoms of distemper include runny eyes and a dry nose. If your dog drags itself along the ground in a sitting position, suspect worms immediately.Fleas, which will happily jump from dogs to humans, can be another problem. These bloodsuckers can actually kill a tiny puppy, simply through blood loss. Always be sure to keep kennels and yard clean to reduce the flea problem.

If you live in a tick prone area, be sure to keep a tick collar on your dog at all times. Your pet’s life may depend on it! Grass ticks cause itchy lumps that can become infected when scratched. Luckily, the tick vaccine works well and quickly and can save a dog that looks like it is gasping its last breath.
