Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be contracted from the black-legged, or deer tick. Deer ticks look like small dog ticks. This disease occurs in both North America and in Europe, although different species of deer tick are usually responsible for spreading it.The symptoms of Lyme disease look different in every person. However, they can commonly include a bulls-eye shaped rash spreading out from the site of the bite, and flu-like symptoms. Later cases of Lyme disease may also display musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiac, arthritic, and mental symptoms.

Rickettsial Infections The Rickettsiae are minute infectious agents, smaller than most germs and larger than most viruses. Most classifications put them midway between the bacteria and the viruses. Rickettsia are too large to pass through a bacterial filter and are visible with an ordinary microscope. Like the viruses, they multiply only in the presence of living cells and many of them live inside living cells. They usually are transferred from animals to men by ticks, mites, fleas, or lice. Many of the rickettsial diseases of men have been identified as such only during the last fifty years.

The disease is reported worldwide and throughout the United States.What causes Lyme Disease: Lyme disease is mostly caused by the bite of an infected tick. Different ticks are carriers in the different regions. The ‘deer tick’ in the Northeast and midwest, The ‘black-legged tick’ in the South, The ‘western black-legged tick’ in the West, and The ‘lone star tick’ found in several regions are all considered as lyme disease spreaders.
